Merlin G. Smith is the System Applications program manager for the Advanced Silicon Technology Organization at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Laboratory, Yorktown Heights, New York. He has been active in the IEEE Computer Society since the 1960s, serving in many capacities, including the office of president in 1977 and 1978.

Smith received his BSEE degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1950 and his MSEE degree from Columbia University in 1957. He has been a member of IEEE since 1946 and is a fellow of the IEEE.
