Hui Lei 2017 Technical Achievement Award

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 10 March 2017 – Dr. Hui Lei, Chief Technology Officer of IBM Watson Health Cloud and IEEE Fellow, has been selected to receive the IEEE Computer Society 2017 Technical Achievement Award. Dr. Lei was recognized “for pioneering contributions to scalable access to real-world data.”

Dr. Lei is an IBM Distinguished Engineer, an IBM Master Inventor, and a member of the IBM Academy of Technology. Previously he was Senior Manager, Cloud Platform Technologies at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, and led IBM’s worldwide research strategies in cloud infrastructure services and cloud managed services.

Dr. Lei’s work has spanned the areas of mobile and pervasive computing, big data, cloud computing, and enterprise computing. He has initiated and led pioneering research on mobile crowdsensing, context services, wide-area dependable messaging, management as a service, systems of insight, and health cloud. His technical vision and creative contributions have influenced many commercial software products and services, which have generated revenue in the hundreds of millions of dollars and have been deployed by enterprises around the globe. Dr. Lei is an inventor of over  70 U.S. and international patents.  He has been recognized with numerous IBM Outstanding Technical Achievement Awards, IBM Research Accomplishments, IBM Outstanding Research Accomplishments, and IBM Invention Achievement Awards.

Dr. Lei is a member of the IEEE Computer Society Golden Core, Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing, and a past Chair of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Business Informatics and Systems. He has served as a Steering Committee Chair, General Chair, Program Committee Chair, or Keynote Speaker of many international conferences. He received a Distinguished Service Award from the IEEE Computer Society for his continual and outstanding service to the society’s mobile computing, cloud computing, and e-business communities.

He received the B.S. degree from Sun Yat-sen University, an M.S. degree from New York University, and a Ph.D. degree from Columbia University; all in Computer Science.

The IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award is given for outstanding and innovative contributions to the fields of computer and information science and engineering or computer technology, usually within the past 10, and not more than 15, years. Contributions must have significantly promoted technical progress in the field.

The other 2017 award winners are Professors Rafail Ostrovsky, Baba Vemuri, and Ingrid Verbauwhede.

The award consists of a certificate and a $2,000 honorarium.  The Computer Society presented this award at the annual awards ceremony on 14 June 2017 in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.
