Electronic products come with information for use, maintenance and troubleshooting

When companies produce new products, they must analyze what information to best provide their consumers. What information is provided is determined by regulatory mandates and industry standards alike. This past April, IEEE published a revised version of their standards on general requirements on product user information (IEC/IEEE 82079-1 Standards) and within months, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) has adopted them as a national standard.

The standard serves to provide the basics on technical product documentation across many product sectors. Developed by IEC Technical Committee 3, the new standards aim to “enable consumers to use products more safely and effectively” (Eirik Selvik, Chair of IEC TC 3).

When developing their product user information, companies should take into consideration who their target audience is, how the product is meant to be used, the safest way of using it and cover any liability issues relevant to the product.
